Placemakers
Graduate Urban Designer
Nairobi, Kenya
Mark is an urban enthusiast and an activist. His work spans the urban design practice spectrum - from policy and technical advisory to advocacy and grassroots activism.
He works with Placemakers, a Dutch non-profit consultancy and design studio that promotes strong communities by stimulating an active and joint bottom-up process of placemaking through co-creation. He has been instrumental in the Making Cities Together – an international knowledge exchange project in Nairobi that is led by Placemakers in collaboration with INTI among other stakeholders. Being familiar with Nairobi’s social and spatial networks, he is a master in connecting ideas, people and places.
Besides this, he works at Nairobi City County Government where he gives technical support to the city government’s public space revitalisation program. He was part of a study team that led the citywide inventory, mapping and assessment of Public Open Spaces - a baseline survey using an innovative low-cost tool, and methodology developed by UN-Habitat to asses, monitor, and report on the general progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11.7, “by 2030, provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, particularly for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities.”
His interest areas include public space, placemaking, and the nexus of Urbanism and Science.
