This informal discussion brings together engineers, architects, planners, and a behavioral psychologist to explore how high performing streets that serve multiple uses require more than engineering.

Shared space is a once forgotten way of looking at streets that is now experiencing a renaissance. In the 19th Century and the early part of the twentieth century, routinely streets served as public spaces. Without specific rules and markings, street cars, horse drawn wagons, merchants pedestrians and bicyclists negotiated shared use of the space, generally in a courteous and civil manner. After automobiles were introduced, the higher speeds and mass of the vehicles rendered civil negotiation all but impossible, and led to an epidemic of injuries and deaths.
