"Ever tried. Ever failed. No Matter. Try Again. Fail Again. Fail Better."
— Samuel Beckett
Ireland's phoenix-like recovery from the financial crisis is a common perception internationally in recent years. However, the rapid recovery in some sectors has exacerbated long-standing problems in urban centres, from poverty to gang violence to the inequitable distribution of public amenities.
Focusing on the long-vacant site of Dublin's demolished Victorian Fishmarket, the aim of the Fail Better workshop is to explore how a placemaking approach can be used to address these complex challenges through an in-depth, real-world example. Workshop leaders will share their experience working on previous efforts in the area, including temporary urbanism, building re-use, community action, and a failed masterplan.
We ask that those who attend have economic, political, sociological, or design expertise. Our aim is encourage as much input from participants as possible. We will ask you to
to bring your expertise to bear on the complex challenges facing this site. Have a look at our
video introduction to the site to give you a better feel for the challenge. We will develop ideas on progressing a regeneration plan, which is innovative and can overcome difficulties without creating new problems for the future. Here is also a
link to the original masterplan and proposals for the market prepared for Dublin City Council which have not yer come to fruition.
